For years a black and white photograph of a furrowed brow middle-aged man hung in our home as a solemn face stares into the onlookers gaze. A young girl of four is seen on his lap. I always knew they were distant family members. Their faces reveal a harsh life. The man in the picture was my mother’s grandfather, Dolph McNary and the girl, his daughter, Gladys, who died of influenza shortly after the picture was taken. On the back of the picture my grandmother wrote, “To Marilyn, from your Mother.” The photograph was taken in 1908.
